Many emergency relief organizations are providing services to people most affected by the storm. Here are a couple of suggestions for ways you can help.
- Connecticut Food Bank, which provides food to 600 food programs throughout the shoreline and most of the state, is having a "virtual food drive" on its website, http://www.ctfoodbank.org.
- United Way Hurricane Sandy Recovery Fund will focus on near- and long-term recovery. Contributions to the fund will be used by local United Ways to address recovery in communities declared FEMA disaster areas, www.uwsandyrecovery.org.
- Feeding America, the hunger-relief agency with headquarters in Chicago, which has 200 member agencies in the country, also has a "donate now" button on its website, http://www.feedingamerica.org.
- Salvation Army, donations can be made on its website, http://www.salvationarmyct.org, or mail a donation to Hurricane Sandy Relief, The Salvation Army, Southern New England Headquarters, 855 Asylum Ave., Hartford, CT 06105
- American Red Cross has a disaster-relief link on its website. The site emphasizes that not only money, but also blood donations, are urgently needed, because blood drives had to be cancelled due to the storm, http://www.redcross.org.
- Save the Children has a donation link dedicated to little ones in need, http://www.savethechildren.org.
- Humane Society of the United States is accepting donations to help animals affected by the storm, http://www.humanesociety.org.
